Vancouver does not get the deep freezes some regions do, but cold, damp weather is still one of the toughest conditions for a car battery.
Battery chemistry slows down as temperatures fall. A battery at 0°C delivers noticeably less cranking power than the same battery at 20°C. At the same time, cold engine oil is thicker and makes the starter work harder, so the engine asks for more from a battery that already has less to give.
Much of Metro Vancouver driving is stop-and-go. Short trips with the heater, wipers, lights and defrost on do not give the alternator enough time to fully recharge the battery after starting. Over a few weeks, the battery runs lower and lower.
A marginal battery can seem fine all autumn and then fail completely the first time the temperature drops. A quick load test before winter catches that before it becomes a no-start morning.
